Compare Word Documents

See line-by-line differences in text extracted from two .docx files. Your files are processed in this browser tab.

A quick example: two changes to a project update

Try sample documents in the empty workspace above, then choose Compare documents. The sample project update has the same three lines in both files, with two edits:

  • Deadline: Friday in the original becomes Monday in the revised document.
  • Status: Draft in the original becomes Ready in the revised document.

The comparison shows 2 changed lines, 0 added lines and 0 removed lines. These samples keep the same line order. In your own files, inserting or removing a line can make later lines appear changed because lines are matched by position.

How to compare two Word documents

Select an original .docx file and a revised .docx file, then choose Compare documents. Review the totals and changed lines on this page. The original and revised text are shown together so you can inspect each difference. Your original files are not changed.

What this comparison checks

This tool compares text extracted from the main document body, line by line. Lines are matched by position. Inserting or removing a line can make later lines appear changed.

Supported files and limits

  • Use two .docx files. Older .doc files and mixed PDF/Word comparisons are not supported.
  • Formatting, page layout and images are not compared.
  • Headers, footers and comments are not included.
  • This is not a review of Word's tracked-change history.
  • Results show up to 300 changed lines. There is no downloadable comparison report.

Comparing another file type?

Use Text Compare for plain text or PDF Compare for two PDFs. Our file comparison guide also covers Excel, CSV and JSON.

Can I compare a Word document with a PDF?

This tool needs two .docx files. To check wording across different formats, follow the Word and PDF text comparison steps: extract each file to plain text, check the reading order and line breaks, then use Text Compare. This does not compare layout or images, and scanned PDFs need OCR first.
