A CLEARER SECOND LOOK

Compare files.
Know what changed.

Two versions. One question: what's different? Choose your file type to find the right comparison, from a Word draft to a spreadsheet export.

  • No account needed
  • Files processed in your browser
  • Originals unchanged
01 / CHOOSE YOUR FORMAT

What are you comparing?

Pick a tool for two files of the same type.

DOCX

Compare Word documents

Review wording changes between an original draft and a revised document.

You'll see
Added, removed and changed text lines, shown together.
Good to know
Main body text only. No formatting, comments or tracked-change history.
PDF

Compare PDFs

Check two versions of a PDF with side-by-side pages and a visual difference view.

You'll see
Rendered page differences, with a text comparison option.
Good to know
Text comparison needs a text layer. Scans do not become searchable text.
XLSX

Compare Excel files

Find changed values in two versions of a spreadsheet.

You'll see
Changed row and column coordinates with before-and-after values.
Good to know
First worksheet only, matched by cell position. Formula values must be saved in the file.
PASTE / TXT

Compare text

Paste two versions or open text files to inspect a wording change.

You'll see
Line-by-line differences with added, removed and modified totals.
Good to know
Lines are matched by position. Inserted lines can shift later differences.
CSV

Compare CSV files

Check changes between two exports with the same row and column order.

You'll see
Changed cells with their row and column positions.
Good to know
Records are not matched by an ID column. Reordered rows can appear changed.
JSON

Compare JSON files

Review two JSON files after their indentation has been made consistent.

You'll see
Text differences between the pretty-printed JSON versions.
Good to know
Object keys are not sorted. Key order and array order can affect the result.

Need a PDF text report? Compare PDF Text produces a downloadable text diff with page references. It reads the existing text layer; it does not perform OCR.

Comparing lists instead? List Diff shows added, removed and common entries.

02 / DIFFERENT FORMATS

Can I compare a Word document with a PDF?

There is no direct mixed Word/PDF comparison here. If you only need to check the wording, extract both files to plain text first, then compare the text files.

  1. Extract the Word text

Open the .docx file in DOCX to Text, check the preview and download the .txt file.

  2. Extract the PDF text

Use PDF to Text for the PDF. Check the reading order and download its .txt file. Scanned pages need OCR elsewhere first.

  3. Compare the two text files

Open both outputs in Text Compare. Align paragraph breaks when needed: extraction can introduce line breaks that look like wording changes.

This checks extracted wording, not visual equivalence. Images, layout, headers and other content can be lost during extraction. Review the original documents as well.

03 / BEFORE YOU COMPARE

A few useful answers.

Why do many lines or cells appear changed?

Word and Text Compare match lines by position; Excel and CSV Compare match cells by position. An inserted paragraph or a reordered row can shift later matches. Keep the same order when you want to check values at matching positions.

Does comparing files change the originals?

No. The comparison tools read your selected files and show a result. They do not overwrite the original documents.

Can I compare confidential documents?

These tools process selected file contents in your browser, without uploading them for comparison. Follow your organization's rules for confidential documents, and read how FileUp24 handles privacy. Optional site analytics is separate from file processing.

Can I download every comparison as a report?

No. Word, Text, Excel, CSV and JSON comparisons show their results on the page. The separate Compare PDF Text tool offers a .txt diff report.
